Dreaming of a Phoenix Rising

Dreaming of a Phoenix Rising is a sonic exploration into the racial trauma Black communities have faced at the hands of global antiBlackness and white supremacy over time as well as the ways the African Diaspora has survived, healed, and thrived. A poem is narrated throughout the piece, telling the story of Black Phoenix’s rise and fall from the ashes. The Black Phoenix represents Black life and being, soaring above and finding relation to the soundscapes in the fixed media track. The piece ebbs and flows between soundscapes of the Black quotidian, drawing material from field recordings and Gullah audio archives. Dreaming of a Phoenix Rising explores memory, non-linearity, protest, trauma, fugitivity, and healing not only to deeply listen to how Black communities have cared for one another but also to amplify the healing in Black livingness and ways of knowing
